About Lake Baratan in Bedugul

Article History of Lake Beratan Bedugul, Bali*

*Lake Beratan: "God's Mirror" in the Heart of Bedugul*

Lake Beratan is located in Candikuning Village, Baturiti District, Tabanan Regency, Bali. This lake is located at an altitude of 1,231 meters above sea level, right in the Bedugul mountain area. Because the air is cool and often foggy, the Balinese call it a "purified" lake.

*1. Origins & Beliefs*
According to Balinese belief, Lake Beratan is a holy lake. In the middle of the lake stands *Ulun Danu Beratan Temple* which was built around the 17th century during the Mengwi Kingdom.
This temple is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of water, lakes and rivers. For Balinese farmers, Dewi Danu is believed to regulate the Subak irrigation system so that rice fields in Tabanan, Badung and Buleleng still receive water.

*2. History Function*
In the past, the Bedugul area was an important area of the Mengwi Kingdom. Lake Beratan is the main water source for agriculture. Therefore, temples are built on water as a symbol of the relationship between humans, nature and God - the concept of Tri Hita Karana.

*3. Lake Beratan Today*
Now Lake Beratan is one of Bali's tourist icons. Apart from the Ulun Danu Temple which often appears on the 50,000 banknote, there are also the Bedugul Botanical Gardens and the Candikuning fruit market.
The temperature here is 15-20°C, so it is a favorite place to take a break from the heat of Bali's beaches.

*Unique fact*: The depth of the lake can be up to 22 meters. If the dry season is long, the lake level can recede and the temple looks more "on land".
